Positive Material Identification (PMI)
XL3 Series analyzers, long a standard in positive material identification (PMI) instrumentation, are now available with the WeldSpot, a selectable 3 mm small-spot feature and CamShot view, the first CCD camera and sample imaging system to be integrated into a handheld XRF analyzer forPMI. WeldSpot allows users to toggle between full area analysis and small sample areas. This on-board, one-touch, icon-selectable feature is always immediately available for use and is never lost. WeldSpot, when combined with CamShot, is ideal for positioning, analyzing and recording the analytical results of small weld areas and components something previously only achievable with benchtop XRF analyzers. The XL3t displays a picture of the tested area on the instrument screen and stores the image along with the analysis data for easy reference, data management and data integrity.
Solutions for Compliance Screening in Plastics and Polymers
CHICAGO (March 18, 2009) Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, will demonstrate its handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XL3 Series analyzer at NPE2009. The versatile x-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument has the ability to measure elemental concentrations in plastics and polymers quickly and simply, without the need for special calibration or other user input.
The passage of the Consumer Product Safety Act of 2008, H.R. 4040, reduces the permissible levels of lead in paint, sets allowable levels of lead in all other materials, implements an alternative standard for
measuring lead in surface coatings and permits the use of XRF analyzers for screening purposes.
An effective screening program using handheld XRF analysis greatly reduces the chances that lead containing materials will enter the manufacturing process or accidentally end up on store shelves. This
starts with a process that includes rapid screening of metals, polymers and components at the (subcontractor's) receiving dock, in the warehouse, during product assembly and even at vendor sites, including testing through packaging to save time.

ASD Inc. Announces Call for Entries for ‘09 Instrument Support Program
ASD Inc. ( formerly Analytical Spectral Devices) is accepting entries for the annual Alexander Goetz Instrument Support Program, for the 2009 calendar year, from field researchers in the areas of remote sensing and field spectroscopy. The annual program encourages novel, unconventional and/or fundamental research. The program is co-sponsored by the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), a member organization of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Now in its third year, the Instrument Support Program offers temporary use of ASD field instruments (FieldSpec® 3 and FieldSpec® HandHeld) to a maximum of ten recipients. The program provides field instrumentation to graduate students pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. within an accredited college or university program in the United States and all countries where Carnet documentation for shipments is accepted. Additionally, up to a total of $500 in publication charges (if the resulting paper is published in an approved publication) and/or travel assistance and print charges for presentation of an accepted abstract at a relevant scientific conference will be provided for each recipient.
